Established by: United Nations (UN).
Purpose: To promote awareness about global urbanization and encourage sustainable urban development.
2025 Edition: Marks the 12th edition of World Cities Day.
2025 Theme: “People-Centred Smart Cities” – focuses on technology, data-driven planning, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve quality of urban life.
Permanent General Theme: “Better City, Better Life.”
Objectives:
– Promote international cooperation in addressing urban challenges.
– Encourage inclusive, resilient, and sustainable cities.
– Highlight solutions for housing, mobility, infrastructure, climate resilience, and urban planning.
Organized by: UN-Habitat under the framework of Urban October.
Relevance to SDGs: Supports SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).
