Civil Service Institute Pala (CSIP) pioneered the path for Keralites to excel in the Indian Civil Services through its Malayalam Optional programme. Since its inception in 2000, the Institute has successfully guided 25 batches of aspirants, with almost 274 students securing positions in the prestigious Civil Services. Notable achievers include Smt. Aswathy S. IAS, Smt. Anupama T.V. IAS, Smt. Haritha V. Kumar IAS, Sri Jyothis Mohan IRS, Sri Harikishore S. IAS, Dr. Alby John Varghese IAS, Dr. Renu Raj IAS, Dr. Dileesh Sasi IAS, Smt. Sameera S. IAS, Smt. Sikha Surendran IAS, Sri Arun K. Pavithran IPS, Sri Nidhin Raj P. IPS, Dr. Manjima P. IPS, Sri Anand Pyarelal IPS, etc. The Institute's dominance in mentoring students for Malayalam Optional is well-established and unparalleled, a testament to its exceptional faculty and guidance.
The Civil Services Mains Examination consists of nine papers and caries a total of 1750 marks. The last two papers are optional papers. The candidate may choose his optional paper from a long list of subjects. The list contains, in addition to most usual regular subjects, almost all the regional languages. It means that a candidate from Kerala can now offer her/his own mother tongue as the optional subject. The Malayalam language and its literature constitute in that case paper seven and eight, and they carry 250 marks each.
Either of the optional papers is divided into two sections and comprises six units. The syllabus deals mostly with the origin and development of the Malayalam language and literature, and the linguistic literary theories that emerged in each year. In paper two, the emphasis, is mostly on literature.
Acquisition of information on the prescribed topics alone can not help the candidates beyond a certain limit. What is important is to arrange the information in an orderly manner and present it in accordance with the stipulation regarding time and length limits.
