Uturuncu

Scientists from China, the UK, and the US recently studied Uturuncu, a “zombie” volcano in southwestern Bolivia, and concluded that it poses no immediate eruption risk. • Location & Structure: Uturuncu is a stratovolcano in the Andes, composed mainly of dacitic lava domes and flows. • Magma System: It sits atop the Altiplano-Puna Magma Body (APMB), a massive underground magma reservoir extending under southern Bolivia, northern Chile, and northern Argentina. • “Zombie” Volcano: Named so because it shows signs of activity (like ground deformation) without erupting, indicating a potentially long dormancy phase.
