National Green Tribunal (NGT)
A joint committee informed the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that stone-crushing units have altered the course of the Chakki River, causing ecological damage. The Chakki River, a tributary of the Beas, flows through Himachal Pradesh and Punjab, merging with the Beas near Pathankot. It is fed by snow and rain from the Dhauladhar mountains. Unregulated sand mining and crushing activities are eroding the riverbed and banks, threatening the ecosystem. The Beas River, one of Punjab’s historic Five Rivers, was known as Arjiki or Hyphasis in ancient times.
