Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary

 

Location: Situated in Bargarh district, Odisha; lies close to the Hirakud Dam on the Mahanadi River.
Establishment: Declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1985.
Historical Significance: Associated with freedom fighter Veer Surendra Sai; his base at Barapathara during the rebellion against the British was located within the sanctuary.
Vegetation: Dominated by mixed and dry deciduous forests.
Flora: Major species include Sal, Asana, Bija, Aanla, and Dhaura.
Fauna: Home to Indian leopards, sloth bears, chousingha (four-horned antelope), sambar deer, gaurs (Indian bison), wild boars, and Indian wild dogs.
Avifauna: A major wintering site for migratory birds; notable species include crested serpent eagle, flowerpeckers, red-vented bulbul, treepie, drongo, and oriental white-eye.
