Yellow Line

What the Yellow Line Is
The Yellow Line is a demarcation line across the Gaza Strip established under the October 2025 US-brokered ceasefire/peace plan between Israel and Hamas. It divides the territory into two parts: an area west of the line where most Palestinians live and an area east of it where Israeli forces have redeployed.

Why It’s in the News
Recent coverage has focused on how this line is being used politically and militarily:
Israeli military statements: Israel’s Chief of Staff has described the Yellow Line as a “new border” — suggesting that Israel intends to hold and possibly formalize military control up to that line rather than withdrawing further.

Controversy and criticism: The United Nations has opposed treating the Yellow Line as a new border, saying doing so would change the internationally recognized borders of Gaza and Israel and violate the spirit of the ceasefire agreement.
Humanitarian impact: Actions around the line — including demolitions and Israeli forces moving or fortifying positions near it — are reported to be restricting Palestinians from returning to their homes in parts of Gaza and trapping families.

Broader Context
The line comes from a multi-phase peace plan, with the Yellow Line marking the first stage of Israeli redeployment in Gaza.
There are widespread fears it could become a de facto border, even though the ceasefire agreement does not formally change Gaza’s internationally recognized boundaries.
