World Lake Day

What is World Lake Day?

World Lake Day is a new annual observance established by the United Nations General Assembly to raise awareness about the importance of lakes and the ecosystems they support.

The UN resolution A/RES/79/142, adopted in December 2024, designates 27 August as World Lake Day and invites all countries, organizations, stakeholders, and civil society to observe the day through awareness, education, and sustainable-lake-management actions.

Why 27 August? — Significance of the Date August 27 was chosen to honor the date of the first World Lake Environment Conference (LECS ’84) held in Shiga Prefecture, Japan (home to Lake Biwa), which convened on 27 August 1984.

The International Lake Environment Committee (ILEC) has been instrumental in promoting global lake conservation, and the date’s selection reflects continuity with historical efforts to bring attention to lakes.

The First Observance: 27 August 2025 Because this was the inaugural year, activities and awareness efforts were especially emphasized. Below are key aspects of how the day was observed and its themes.

Themes & Aims The first World Lake Day was centered around: Recognizing lakes as vital freshwater ecosystems that supply water, support biodiversity, regulate climate, and provide livelihoods.

Drawing attention to threats such as pollution, overuse, habitat degradation, climate change, invasive species, and altered water regimes. Encouraging restoration, sustainable management, community engagement, and policy action to protect lakes and their ecosystems for future generations.
