Unified Payments Interface (UPI): India's Digital Payment Ecosystem Goes Global
Why in News?
India and Spain have agreed to advance technical discussions on interoperability between India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and Spain's Bizum digital payments platform. The initiative aims to facilitate seamless cross-border digital payments while strengthening economic and financial cooperation between the two countries.
Unified Payments Interface (UPI)
• Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is a real-time digital payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
• It was launched on 11 April 2016 under the regulatory supervision of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
• UPI is authorised under the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007.
• It enables instant bank-to-bank fund transfers using mobile applications, operating round the clock.
National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI)
• NPCI is the umbrella organisation for retail payment systems in India.
NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL)
• NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) is a wholly owned subsidiary of NPCI established in April 2020.
• It is responsible for expanding UPI and RuPay to international markets.
• NIPL assists partner countries in:
o Enabling UPI acceptance for cross-border payments.
o Developing UPI-like real-time payment systems.
o Building domestic card payment networks similar to RuPay.
Latest India–Spain Initiative
India and Spain have agreed to accelerate discussions on UPI–Bizum interoperability.
The proposed arrangement aims to:
• Enable seamless cross-border digital payments.
• Facilitate tourism, trade and business transactions.
• Strengthen financial connectivity between India and Europe.
• Complement broader cooperation in investment, professional mobility and infrastructure.
What is Bizum?
• Bizum is Spain's real-time digital payment platform.
• It is operated by a consortium of Spanish banks.
• Bizum has expanded beyond Spain through the EuroPA initiative, enabling instant cross-border payments with:
o Bancomat (Italy)
o SIBS (Portugal)
The proposed UPI–Bizum interoperability would connect India's digital payment ecosystem with an expanding European instant payment network.
