Why in News?
Thailand’s Peaceful Society Promotion Act, an amnesty law aimed at promoting political reconciliation, came into effect on August 24, 2026. 
The Act seeks to address political conflicts arising from Thailand’s prolonged political instability, particularly following the 2006 military coup that ousted former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
The law covers politically motivated offences committed between January 1, 2005 and July 16, 2025, potentially benefiting thousands of people involved in political protests and conflicts.
Key Provisions of the Act
•    The Act provides amnesty for more than 40 categories of offences arising from political conflicts or politically motivated expression, including sedition, rebellion, cybercrimes and violations of emergency laws.
•    It can benefit people who were convicted, prosecuted or are still under investigation, subject to the eligibility conditions prescribed by the Act.
•    However, offences involving corruption, lese majeste (Article 112), murder, serious injury and certain offences against private entities are excluded.
•    A Peaceful Society Promotion Committee, headed by the Prime Minister or Deputy Prime Minister, will be established to determine eligibility. It will include representatives from Parliament, human rights experts and civil society organisations.
•    For eligible cases, the committee can release prisoners, close investigations and prosecutions, dismiss pending cases and clear criminal records.
The Act is significant because it attempts to use legal amnesty as a mechanism for political reconciliation, potentially ending thousands of politically motivated prosecutions and clearing the criminal records of eligible individuals.
