Similipal National Park
Why in news? Similipal National Park recorded a significant increase in mugger crocodile population in the latest wildlife census.
• Located in Odisha and forms part of the Mayurbhanj Elephant Reserve.
• Has the status of National Park, Tiger Reserve and Biosphere Reserve.
• It is part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves (since 2009).
• Lies in two biogeographical zones: Mahanadian east coastal region (Oriental realm) and Chhotanagpur biotic province (Deccan Peninsular zone).
• Highest peak is Khairiburu (1,168 m).
• Important rivers and streams: Budhabalang, Baitarani and Subarnarekha.
• Contains the largest Sal forest belt in India.
• Has about 1,076 species of vascular plants, including 93 orchids, ~300 medicinal plants and 52 endangered plant species.
• Faunal diversity includes 42 mammals, 264 birds, 39 reptiles and 12 amphibians.
• The reserve has about 1,265 villages within its limits.
• Major tribal communities: Erenga Kharias, Mankirdias, Ho, Gond and Munda.
