Schizothorax Pelzami

Why in News?
•    The Sangno clan of East Kameng district, Arunachal Pradesh, has launched a community-led initiative to conserve Schizothorax pelzami, a Himalayan ray-finned fish. 
•    The initiative aims to protect the species from predatory mahseer and ensure the long-term sustainability of traditional community fishing. 
About Schizothorax pelzami
•    Schizothorax pelzami, commonly known as the Transcaspian marinka, is a Himalayan ray-finned fish. 
•    It belongs to the carp family (Cyprinidae). 
•    Naturally distributed in the freshwater river systems of Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, and Iran. 
•    It inhabits temperate freshwater rivers and is a benthopelagic species (living near both the river bottom and the water column), generally in waters of 10–20°C. 
•    It is locally known as Ngarsing in the Nyishi language. 
•    The species was translocated from Lapabung Stream (Talo village) to Richaso Stream (Weshi village) in East Kameng district. 
Conservation Initiative
•    Members of the Sangno clan released 52 fingerlings into a section of the Richaso Stream that is inaccessible to mahseer. 
•    The objective is to improve the fish's survival, breeding and population recovery. 
Community-Based Conservation Measures
•    The village has proposed a five-year ban on fishing in the Richaso Stream to allow the fish population to recover. 
•    The initiative seeks to ensure the long-term sustainability of traditional community fishing practices. 
•    Future plans include promoting eco-angling and stream-trail trekking as sustainable livelihood activities.
