Salkhan Fossil Park

Salkhan Fossil Park, located in Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh, is a significant geo-paleontological site recently added to UNESCO’s Tentative World Heritage List. Spanning 25 hectares in the Vindhyan ranges, it features 1.4-billion-year-old stromatolite fossils—ancient microbial structures that provide rare insights into early life on Earth and the planet’s oxygenation history. Discovered in the 1930s and formally developed as a park in 2002, it holds immense scientific value with over 14 genera and 21 species of microfossils preserved in Bhander limestone. The site is protected under multiple environmental laws and lies within an eco-sensitive zone. Supported by the Uttar Pradesh government and scientific institutions like the Birbal Sahni Institute, a full nomination dossier is being prepared for UNESCO. With enhanced infrastructure and eco-tourism initiatives underway, Salkhan Fossil Park stands as a vital link to Earth’s early biosphere and a globally significant heritage site.
