Ram Vanji Sutar
Ram Vanji Sutar (19 Feb 1925 – 18 Dec 2025) was a legendary Indian sculptor whose monumental works have become iconic features of India’s public art and national identity. He was born in Gondur village in Maharashtra’s Dhule district and was drawn to art and sculpture from childhood.
He trained at the Sir J. J. School of Art and Architecture in Mumbai, graduating as a gold medallist. Over a career spanning many decades, Sutar became known for his mastery in bronze, stone, and large-scale public sculpture.

Statue of Unity (Kevadia, Gujarat) – The world’s tallest statue (182 m / 597 ft), depicting Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister.

Ram V. Sutar passed away on 18 December 2025 at his home in Noida at the age of 100 after age-related illness.
