Ram Vanji Sutar

Ram Vanji Sutar (19 Feb 1925 – 18 Dec 2025) was a legendary Indian sculptor whose monumental works have become iconic features of India’s public art and national identity. He was born in Gondur village in Maharashtra’s Dhule district and was drawn to art and sculpture from childhood. 
He trained at the Sir J. J. School of Art and Architecture in Mumbai, graduating as a gold medallist. Over a career spanning many decades, Sutar became known for his mastery in bronze, stone, and large-scale public sculpture. 

Iconic Contributions & Major Works
Some of Sutar’s most famous works include:
Statue of Unity (Kevadia, Gujarat) – The world’s tallest statue (182 m / 597 ft), depicting Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister. 
Mahatma Gandhi Statue (Parliament Complex, New Delhi) – A meditative seated figure that has become an enduring symbol of Gandhi’s philosophy. 
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Statue (Parliament Grounds) – A dynamic equestrian statue representing the Maratha warrior king. 
Numerous other memorials and commissioned works across India, including international sculptures gifted to countries like France and the UK. 
His influence reached beyond India’s borders and helped put Indian monumental sculpture in the global spotlight. 

Recognition & Honors
Sutar received several prestigious awards for his contribution to art and culture, including:
Padma Shri (1999)
Padma Bhushan (2016)
Maharashtra Bhushan Puraskar (state’s highest civilian honor, presented recently at his residence due to age) 

Passing & Legacy
Ram V. Sutar passed away on 18 December 2025 at his home in Noida at the age of 100 after age-related illness. His death has been widely mourned across India, with tributes pouring in from the President, Prime Minister, state leaders, and the artistic community, who described his passing as the end of an era in Indian sculpture.
