Puthur Zoological Park

The park is located in Puthur village, near Thrissur town in the state of Kerala, India. It is spread over approximately 336–340 acres of forest terrain. The park is officially called Thrissur Zoological Park, Wildlife Conservation & Research Centre.

Why It’s Special It is described as India’s first “designer zoo”, meaning it has been conceptualised to integrate natural terrain and immersive landscapes rather than the old traditional cage-style zoo layout. The design is by internationally renowned zoo-designer Jon Coe from Australia.

The layout emphasises naturalistic enclosures, visitor walkways, use of trenches and transparent barriers instead of heavy cages — aiming for better animal welfare and a closer visitor experience to nature. Key Features & Zones There are 23 large enclosures specially developed for various species. It is planned to host approx 70 species of animals (including endemic species of the Western Ghats and exotic species) when fully operational.

The park is divided into themed zones such as: Silent Valley Zone (rainforest-type habitat) African Zululand Zone (for giraffes, zebras etc) Reptile Zone including species like the green anaconda Great Aviary Zone for diverse bird life Modern infrastructure: planned water‐filtration/ reuse systems, considerable landscaping and conservation friendly measures.

History & Timeline The relocation idea: The older zoo facility in Thrissur city (small, cramped) was found inadequate for modern animal welfare. So this project was initiated to shift to Puthur forest land. Clearance and construction: The central authority Central Zoo Authority (CZA) granted approval for shifting animals. Inauguration: The park was officially inaugurated on 28 October 2025 by the Chief Minister of Kerala. Public opening: While inaugurated in October, full public opening is scheduled from January 2026. Why Visit – Benefits A chance to see animals in more naturalistic settings rather than typical zoo cages — better for both animals and the visitor experience. The park creates a tourism boost for Puthur/Thrissur region, making it a destination beyond the usual city attractions. Educational and conservation oriented: It’s designed not just for display, but also for research, wildlife conservation and visitor awareness.
