The Pacific island nation of Palau hosted the world's first-ever live underwater interview to raise awareness for ocean conservation. The interview was conducted in October 2025 between Palau's President, Surangel Whipps Jr., and Estonian Olympic swimmer and activist Merle Liivand. The interview was made possible by LiFi Talking Mask technology, which uses light to transmit sound underwater.The event aimed to highlight the urgent need to protect the oceans, a cause particularly relevant to island nations like Palau which are vulnerable to rising sea levels.
