Operation Meghdoot

Operation Meghdoot was a landmark military operation launched by India on 13 April 1984 to secure control over the Siachen Glacier in the eastern Karakoram Range of the Himalayas. It remains one of the most unique and challenging military deployments in the world due to the extreme altitude and harsh climate.

Why was Operation Meghdoot launched?
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, both India and Pakistan began showing increasing interest in the Siachen Glacier, an un-demarcated region beyond NJ9842 in the India–Pakistan boundary description.
Pakistan began issuing foreign mountaineering permits, indicating its claim.
India feared that Pakistan might attempt to occupy key passes on the glacier.
To pre-empt this, India launched a swift operation to secure the strategically significant areas.

Launch of Operation Meghdoot
Initiated on 13 April 1984 by the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force.
Troops were airlifted and deployed to heights above 18,000–21,000 ft, making it the first military operation conducted at such altitudes.

India took control of key passes:
Sia La
Bilafond La
Later also stabilised positions along the Saltoro Ridge

Significance of the Operation
1. Strategic Advantage
By occupying the Saltoro Ridge, India gained a commanding position over the Siachen Glacier.
This prevented Pakistan from dominating the region or altering the ground reality.

2. Harshest Battlefield in the World
Temperatures plunge to –50°C.
More soldiers have been lost to weather and terrain than to enemy action.
It demonstrated India's logistical and military capability at extreme altitudes.

3. Continues to Influence India–Pakistan Relations
Both sides maintain positions till today, though India holds the higher and more advantageous posts.

Outcome
India successfully secured the Siachen Glacier and continues to maintain control.
The operation remains a symbol of courage, endurance, and strategic foresight for the Indian Armed Forces.
