National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC)

The National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) is a major cultural and educational project being developed by the Government of India at Lothal in Gujarat, one of the ancient sites of the Indus Valley Civilization. It aims to showcase India’s rich maritime history, heritage, and traditions.

 Key Features

The complex will include a maritime museum, heritage theme park, research and training centers, coastal villages, and aquariums. It will highlight India’s ancient shipbuilding and navigation skills, trade links with other civilizations, and the evolution of ports over centuries. The project will use digital displays, 3D models, and interactive exhibits to make history engaging for visitors.

 Purpose and Significance

To preserve and promote India’s maritime legacy, from the Harappan period to modern times. To serve as a center for education and tourism, boosting local employment and economic growth. To honor India’s seafaring traditions, including naval achievements and cultural exchanges through ocean trade.

 Location Importance

Lothal was once an ancient port city of the Harappan Civilization (around 2400 BCE), making it an ideal site for such a complex. The NMHC thus connects India’s ancient maritime past with its modern ambitions in the blue economy.
