M.S. Swaminathan – Father of the Green Revolution in India

Mankombu Sambasivan Swaminathan, popularly known as M.S. Swaminathan, was a renowned Indian agricultural scientist and geneticist who played a pivotal role in transforming India’s food production system. He is often referred to as the “Father of the Green Revolution in India” for his crucial contributions in making the country self-sufficient in food grains during the 1960s and 1970s.

Born on August 7, 1925, in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, Swaminathan initially pursued zoology but later switched to agriculture and genetics after witnessing the Bengal Famine of 1943. He believed science should be used to serve humanity and address hunger and poverty.

Swaminathan was instrumental in introducing and developing high-yielding varieties (HYVs) of wheat and rice, in collaboration with international scientists like Norman Borlaug. His research, combined with the promotion of modern farming practices, irrigation, and the use of fertilizers, led to a dramatic increase in crop productivity in India. This prevented widespread famine and made India largely self-reliant in food grain production.

He held many prominent positions throughout his career, including:

Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)

Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture

Chair of the National Commission on Farmers

Founder of the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF), which works on sustainable agriculture and rural development.

Swaminathan received numerous national and international honors, including the Padma Shri (1967), Padma Bhushan (1972), Padma Vibhushan (1989), and the World Food Prize (1987).

He passed away on September 28, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of scientific excellence, humanitarian service, and a lifelong commitment to ending hunger. His work continues to inspire scientists, policymakers, and farmers in the pursuit of sustainable and equitable agricultural development.
