Magh Bihu (Assam)
• The festival of Bihu has three forms: Bohag Bihu, Kati Bihu and Magh Bihu.
• Each form coincides with key stages of the agricultural cycle.
• Bohag Bihu (mid-April): Marks onset of spring and beginning of sowing season.
• Kati Bihu (October): Observed as a day of prayer for a good harvest.
• Magh Bihu (mid-January): Marks completion of agrarian cycle after harvest.
• Magh Bihu falls on the day of Uttarayan, when the Sun when begins its northward journey to the Makararashi → hence the day is associated with Makar Sankranti.
• On this day, the Sun God is worshipped across India in different forms:
o Pongal (Tamil Nadu), Maghi (Punjab), Uttarayan (Gujarat).
• Celebrated on the cusp of Magh, i.e., the last day of Pausa (Pooh) month.
• Also called Domahi — meaning confluence (samahar) of two months.
