M. T. Vasudevan Nair

M. T. Vasudevan Nair (popularly known as MT) — born Madath Thekkepaattu Vasudevan Nair on 15 July 1933 and passed away on 25 December 2024 — was a towering figure in Malayalam literature, cinema, and cultural life.Hailing from Kudallur, Kerala, MT drew heavily from his early life experiences by the river Bharathapuzha (Nila), which features as a living presence in many of his works.
Early recognition came at age 20, when he won the World Short Story Competition (New York Herald Tribune) for “Valarthumrigangal” .
His breakthrough novel Naalukettu (1958) delved into the decline of a traditional Nair tharavadu in Kerala and won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award. MT scripted over 54 Malayalam films, winning four National Film Awards for Best Screenplay — for Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha, Kadavu, Sadayam, and Parinayam — the most in the category.As a director, he helmed award-winning films such as Nirmalyam (National Award for Best Film and Best Director, 1973) and Oru Cheru Punchiri (National Award for Best Film on Environment).MT’s narratives are deeply rooted in Kerala’s traditional culture, family structures, social transition, and environmental consciousness. He was an outspoken advocate for ecological protection, weaving symbols of nature and riverine life into his storytelling and public life, including activism around the Bharthapuzha (“Nila”) River and Kerala’s conservation issues.He shaped modern Malayalam literature and cinema, discovering and nurturing generations of writers during his tenure as literary editor of Mathrubhumi Weekly.M. T. Vasudevan Nair’s legacy endures through the timeless characters, evocative landscapes, and moral imagination he carved across languages and mediums.
