Kakapo Parrot

The kakapo (Strigops habroptilus) is the world’s heaviest and only flightless parrot, native to New Zealand. Nocturnal and ground-dwelling, it uses strong legs to walk and climb. Its mossy green plumage offers camouflage, and its owl-like face enhances night vision and smell.

Kakapos breed via unique “booming” calls in lek displays, and have slow life cycles—females breed around age 6, and they can live up to 90 years. Once nearly extinct due to predators, they now number around 240 thanks to intensive conservation on predator-free islands.

A true symbol of survival, the kakapo is critically endangered and globally unique.
