Italian cuisine

What Happened?
UNESCO has officially recognised Italian cuisine as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This is historic because it is the first time an entire national cuisine—not just a single dish or food tradition—has received this honour.
The announcement came at the 20th session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee on the Intangible Cultural Heritage, held in New Delhi, India.

What the Recognition Means
Rather than honouring a specific meal or food product, UNESCO’s decision acknowledges Italian cooking as a living cultural practice—encompassing regional diversity, daily rituals, family gatherings, seasonal ingredients, community celebrations, and shared culinary knowledge passed down through generations. UNESCO highlighted Italian food as a social ritual that strengthens family and community bonds. The recognition goes beyond famous dishes like pasta and pizza to emphasise the broader food culture—from olive harvesting to Sunday lunches.

Italy’s Response
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni celebrated the milestone, describing Italy’s cuisine as integral to its national identity, culture, tradition and community life. Italian officials said the designation could boost tourism by highlighting the cultural value of food traditions.

Significance in Global Cultural Heritage
This is a landmark moment in UNESCO history—no country’s full culinary tradition has ever before been recognised in this way.
The designation places Italian food culture alongside other internationally recognised traditional practices, showing how cuisine can be an essential part of cultural heritage in the same way as music, dance, crafts or rituals.

What’s Next
The recognition is expected to help protect and promote authentic Italian food practices worldwide, including safeguarding traditional recipes and artisanal production methods.
