India's First Commercial Matcha Tea Production
Why in News?
•    Assam has become the first Indian state to commercially manufacture Matcha tea.
•    The Chota Tingrai Tea Estate (Tinsukia, Assam) is the first tea estate in India to commercially manufacture Matcha tea.
•    The estate established a Japanese tea-processing facility in 2016 and, after years of experimentation, began commercial Matcha production in 2026.
•    The initiative reflects the diversification of Assam's tea industry beyond conventional black tea.
What is Matcha Tea?
•    Matcha is a finely powdered green tea traditionally associated with Japan, though its origins trace back to China before being introduced to Japan in the 12th century by a Zen Buddhist monk.
•    It is produced from the shade-grown tea plant (Camellia sinensis), which develops higher chlorophyll content and a characteristic bright green colour.
•    Only the young buds and the top three leaves are harvested.
•    The leaves are steamed to prevent oxidation, dried, de-veined, and then stone-ground into a fine powder.
•    Unlike ordinary green tea, the entire powdered leaf is consumed, rather than being infused and discarded.
•    Owing to its specialised cultivation and processing, Matcha is among the most premium and expensive varieties of tea.
Characteristics and Uses
•    Matcha has a grassy, slightly nutty flavour with mild bitterness.
•    It contains higher caffeine and higher antioxidant content than conventional green tea.
