Why in News?
The Hara forests, a major mangrove ecosystem in the Persian Gulf, are facing a serious environmental threat from an oil spill off the southern coast of Qeshm Island, Iran. Satellite imagery has revealed an approximately 160-km-long oil slick, with heavy fuel oil already reaching the shoreline. Ongoing conflict in West Asia is reportedly making cleanup operations more difficult, increasing the risk to the mangrove ecosystem.
Hara Mangroves: Location and Features
• The Hara forests are located around Qeshm Island in the Persian Gulf, extending through the coastal waters of the Strait of Hormuz.
• They consist mainly of the grey mangrove (Avicennia marina), a salt-tolerant mangrove species.
• Avicennia marina possesses specialised root mechanisms that help it survive in saline environments.
• The mangrove roots also help stabilise coastlines and reduce coastal erosion.

Conservation Status and Present Threat
The Hara forests are recognised as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, highlighting their ecological importance and the need for conservation.
The immediate threat is an oil spill caused by damage to the bulk carrier Minoan Pioneer after it was struck by a projectile. Heavy fuel oil has leaked into the surrounding marine environment, producing a slick extending for about 160 km.
The spill poses multiple risks to the mangrove ecosystem, including contamination of coastal habitats, damage to mangrove vegetation and disruption of marine organisms that depend on the forests. Environmentalists have warned that severe damage could affect the local food chain, fisheries and natural coastal defences.
