Gorumara National Park

Gorumara National Park is a beautiful wildlife sanctuary located in the Dooars region of West Bengal, India. It is famous for its rich biodiversity, scenic landscapes, and population of the Indian one-horned rhinoceros.

 Location Situated in the Jalpaiguri district of northern West Bengal. Lies on the foothills of the eastern Himalayas, along the Murti and Raidak rivers.

 History and Establishment Initially declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1949. Upgraded to a national park in 1994 due to its ecological importance and rich wildlife. Covers an area of around 80 square kilometers.

 Landscape and Vegetation The park consists of tropical and subtropical forests, grasslands, and riverine belts. Dominated by sal trees, mixed forests, and dense undergrowth. The rivers and moist environment support lush greenery throughout the year.

 Flora and Fauna Flagship species: Indian one-horned rhinoceros. Other animals include Asian elephants, Indian bison (gaur), leopards, sambar deer, spotted deer, barking deer, and wild boars. The park is also rich in birdlife, with over 200 species such as hornbills, woodpeckers, peafowls, and kingfishers. Reptiles like pythons, cobras, and monitor lizards are also found here.
