Codex Committee on Spices and Culinary Herbs (CCSCH)

The Codex Committee on Spices and Culinary Herbs (CCSCH) is a specialized committee established under the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) — a joint body of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). The Codex system develops international food standards to ensure safe, high-quality, and fair trade of food products worldwide.

Establishment and Purpose

The CCSCH was created in 2013, recognizing the growing importance of spices and herbs in international trade and the need for uniform global standards. Its main objective is to develop and harmonize Codex standards for spices and culinary herbs in their dried and dehydrated forms. These standards help prevent adulteration, ensure quality and safety, and facilitate fair international trade.

Secretariat and Location

The Secretariat of CCSCH is hosted by the Government of India. It functions under the Spices Board of India, which operates under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The headquarters of the Secretariat is located in Kochi (Cochin), Kerala, India, which is also the headquarters of the Spices Board.

Role of the Spices Board of India

The Spices Board of India acts as the host organization and provides technical, administrative, and logistical support for the functioning of the Committee. India’s long history as a global leader in spice production and export makes it an appropriate choice to host this Codex Committee.

Functions of CCSCH

Develops international standards for spices and culinary herbs to ensure food safety and quality. Sets definitions, descriptions, and quality parameters for various spices and herbs. Promotes harmonization of national and international trade standards. Facilitates fair practices in the food trade by reducing disputes and inconsistencies.

Significance
