Bronco Test
What is the Bronco Test
The Bronco Test is a high-intensity aerobic endurance / shuttle run drill, originally used in sports like rugby. A setup with four markers/cones (start = 0m, then at 20m, 40m, 60m).
One set consists of: Run from start to 20m and back Start → 40m → back Start → 60m → back That completes one set. Players must do five continuous sets, without rest in between. The total distance comes to about 1,200 metres. The benchmark time is 6 minutes to complete all 5 sets.
Why BCCI Has Introduced It BCCI’s motivations include: To raise the fitness and endurance standards of Indian cricketers, especially given modern demands in cricket: long matches, more running, frequent matches. Particular concern about fast bowlers: There have been injury issues and stamina concerns (e.g. in recent Test series) where some bowlers were unable to sustain performance.
Observed tendency to rely heavily on gym work rather than on running / aerobic conditioning. The Bronco test forces more running work. To provide a more comprehensive fitness evaluation when used alongside existing tests (Yo-Yo and the 2 km time trial) so that different aspects of fitness are covered.
