Aleppo
The Aleppo region in Syria has become a zone of military confrontation between the Syrian government forces and the Kurdish-led, US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
The Ancient City of Aleppo was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986 for its unique Arab architecture and historical significance.
Aleppo is one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities and a major ancient trade crossroads since the 2nd millennium BCE.
It was ruled by many civilizations including the Hittites, Assyrians, Arabs, Mongols, Mamelukes and Ottomans, making it a layered historical city.
The city preserves a unique urban heritage with landmarks like the 13th-century Citadel, 12th-century Great Mosque, various 17th century madrasas and caravanserais.
Its architecture reflects Hittite, Roman, Byzantine and Ayyubid influences, showing its rich multi-civilisational past.
In 2013, the Ancient City of Aleppo was added to UNESCO’s List of World Heritage in Danger.
