AI-powered football

China recently hosted its first fully autonomous AI-powered football match as part of the ROBO League in Beijing on June 28, 2025. The 3-on-3 humanoid robot tournament featured teams from top universities like Tsinghua University and China Agricultural University, with Tsinghua’s THU Robotics winning the final 5–3. These robots played the entire game without human control, using onboard AI for movement, ball recognition, fall recovery, and team coordination. Equipped with advanced sensors, the robots achieved nearly 90% accuracy in perception and moved at speeds up to 1 m/s. Despite frequent stumbles and comedic errors, the event marked a milestone in autonomous robotics and AI capabilities.

The match served as a live platform to test real-world applications of AI in dynamic, multi-agent environments. It demonstrated China’s rising ambition in robotics and artificial intelligence, backed by state institutions. Organizers, including Booster Robotics, plan future human-robot exhibition matches and a World Humanoid Robot Games in August. While the robots still resemble toddlers learning football, their quick progress signals future roles beyond entertainment—in manufacturing, service industries, and sports tech. This AI football match not only showcased emerging tech but also hinted at a future where intelligent robots actively collaborate and compete in human-centered environments.
