Why in News?
Aadi Perukku, the traditional Tamil festival celebrating rivers and water abundance, was observed across Tamil Nadu. This year, despite poor water flow in the Cauvery, thousands of devotees gathered at Amma Mandapam, Srirangam, to perform rituals associated with the festival.
What is Aadi Perukku?
•    Aadi Perukku is a traditional Tamil festival celebrated on the 18th day of the Tamil month of Aadi (July–August).
•    The word "Perukku" means abundance, swelling or overflowing, symbolising the rise in river levels during the monsoon.
•    The festival is primarily dedicated to water bodies, especially rivers, recognising their role in sustaining agriculture, prosperity and life.
•    It is celebrated mainly along the banks of the Cauvery, Tamirabharani and Thenpennai rivers.
Religious and Cultural Significance
•    Rivers are revered in Hindu tradition as life-giving goddesses capable of purifying sins.
•    The Cauvery is worshipped as the "Dakshina Ganga" (Ganga of the South) and is regarded as an embodiment of Goddess Parvati.
•    At Srirangam, Lord Ranganatha (Vishnu) ceremonially visits the Cauvery and offers gifts, symbolising the sacred bond between the deity and the river.
•    Newly married couples and devotees offer prayers seeking prosperity, fertility and family well-being.
Why is the 18th Day of Aadi Significant?
The number 18 holds deep spiritual significance in Hindu tradition:
•    The Mahabharata War lasted 18 days.
•    The Bhagavad Gita comprises 18 chapters.
•    Hindu tradition recognises 18 Siddhars, renowned saints associated with spiritual wisdom.
•    According to tradition, the Pandavas bathed in the Cauvery on the 18th day of Aadi to cleanse themselves after the Mahabharata war.
Thus, Aadi Perukku symbolises renewal, purification and abundance.
