2030 Commonwealth Games

Why India is bidding for the 2030 Games India sees hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games as a stepping-stone towards its ambition of staging the 2036 Summer Olympics.

The Games mark the 100th anniversary of the Commonwealth Games movement (inaugural in 1930). So the 2030 edition carries extra symbolic significance. For India (and Gujarat in particular) this is an opportunity to present itself as a global sports destination, showcase world-class infrastructure, boost tourism/hospitality, and create legacy facilities.

The bidding country sees benefits in athlete performance (host nation “bump”), infrastructure, and global visibility. Evaluation & Recommendation: The Executive Board has recommended Ahmedabad as the proposed host city.

Final Decision: The full membership of Commonwealth Sport is to vote or ratify the recommendation at its General Assembly in Glasgow on 26 November 2025. The city already has some large-scale sports infrastructure (e.g., the Narendra Modi Stadium, cricket venue, large capacity) which helps the case.
