Tidal Flooding
Recently, the Government of Kerala declared tidal flooding a state-specific disaster due to its increasing frequency along the Kerala coast. Tidal flooding, also known as sunny day or king tide flooding, refers to the temporary inundation of low-lying coastal areas during high tide events without cyclones or heavy rainfall. It is emerging as a major climate-related coastal hazard
Happens regularly—often twice daily with tidal cycles—and is more intense during spring tides. Unlike cyclone-induced storm surges, it is predictable but recurrent.
Leads to flooding of low-lying areas, saltwater intrusion into agricultural land and freshwater sources, damage to infrastructure, and disruption of coastal livelihoods.
