The Sugamya Bharat App, launched in 2021 under the Accessible India Campaign by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), is a significant step towards creating a barrier-free India for persons with disabilities (Divyangjan) and senior citizens.

Purpose and Objectives

Designed as a crowdsourced mobile platform, the app empowers citizens to report accessibility challenges in public infrastructure, transportation systems, and information and communication technology (ICT). It aims to ensure inclusivity, strengthen citizen participation, and promote universal design in everyday life.

Key Features

Recently revamped, the app now offers an intuitive and user-friendly interface, making it easier for elderly and differently-abled users to navigate. The integration of an AI-powered chatbot enables real-time assistance, including information on government schemes and initiatives. Users can upload geo-tagged photos highlighting accessibility barriers, which helps authorities take prompt corrective action.

Impact So Far

As of June 2025, the Sugamya Bharat App has over 14,000 registered users and nearly 84,000 downloads across Android and iOS platforms. It has processed 2,705 complaints, successfully resolving 1,897 of them, reflecting the government’s commitment towards inclusive development.

Additional Features

Available in 10 languages, the app also provides circulars, notifications, and valuable resources related to accessibility, ensuring that stakeholders remain updated about recent policies and programs.
