SLINEX-25: Strengthening India-Sri Lanka Maritime Cooperation
The 12th edition of the Sri Lanka-India Naval Exercise, SLINEX-25, is being held from 14 to 18 August 2025 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. This bilateral exercise, started in 2005, aims to improve naval cooperation and operational understanding between the two neighbouring nations.
Participating Naval Forces
India has sent INS Rana (a guided missile destroyer) and INS Jyoti (a fleet tanker), while Sri Lanka is represented by SLNS Vijayabahu and SLNS Sayura, both advanced offshore patrol vessels. The Special Forces and helicopters from both countries are also taking part in the drills.
Harbour and Sea Phases
SLINEX-25 is conducted in two phases:
* Harbour Phase (14–16 August): Includes professional discussions, expert exchanges, simulator training, cultural events, yoga sessions, and sports activities to build trust and friendship.
* Sea Phase (17–18 August): Focuses on operational coordination and joint naval drills such as gunnery firing, navigation, communication, VBSS, search and rescue, and refuelling at sea. Helicopter operations and cross-deck flying are also included.
Significance
SLINEX enhances interoperability, strengthens regional security, and improves readiness against threats like piracy and smuggling. It reflects India’s Neighbourhood First policy and vision of Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR) under the MAHASAGAR initiative.
SLINEX-25 highlights the deep and growing partnership between India and Sri Lanka. By conducting complex naval operations together, both countries are working towards a safer, more secure Indian Ocean Region.
