Shaksgam Valley
Context
China has rejected India’s territorial claim over the Shaksgam Valley, calling it Chinese territory despite India considering it part of Jammu & Kashmir.
About Shaksgam Valley
Shaksgam Valley, also called the Trans-Karakoram Tract, is a disputed region claimed by India as part of Jammu & Kashmir.
The area is currently controlled by Pakistan and lies within Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK).
It shares borders with China’s Xinjiang region, Siachen Glacier, and northern areas of POK, giving it strategic importance.
In 1963, Pakistan ceded the valley to China under a boundary agreement to settle border differences.
The agreement states that the boundary can be renegotiated after the Kashmir dispute is resolved, acknowledging the dispute.
The region is significant as it enabled the construction of the Karakoram Highway, strengthening China-Pakistan strategic ties.
