Sanchar Mitra Scheme
Sanchar Mitra Scheme: Empowering Youth for Digital Safety
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) launched the Sanchar Mitra Scheme to build digital literacy and cyber safety awareness. It uses university students as volunteers called Sanchar Mitras to act as digital ambassadors in their communities.
Objectives and Aims
The scheme aims to:
* Promote digital literacy and cyber hygiene
* Bridge the gap between citizens and government telecom services
* Empower youth to spread awareness on cyber fraud prevention, EMF radiation safety, and responsible mobile usage
Implementation and Training
The scheme started as a pilot in select institutions and is now expanding nationwide. In Assam, 18 top engineering colleges, including IIT, IIIT, and NIT, are participating. Sanchar Mitras receive training from the National Communications Academy–Technology (NCA-T) and DoT experts in areas like 5G, 6G, AI, cybersecurity, and digital safety.
Roles and Responsibilities
Sanchar Mitras will:
* Conduct awareness campaigns on platforms like Sanchar Saathi and Tarang Sanchar
* Assist citizens in reporting cyber frauds or fake connections
* Act as a link between DoT, field offices, and police, and provide feedback on public challenges
* Gather data on local mobile security issues to help DoT improve policies
Significance
The scheme enhances citizen participation in the digital world, promotes youth empowerment, and creates a safe digital ecosystem by preventing fraud and misinformation.
The Sanchar Mitra Scheme not only builds a digitally aware society but also creates opportunities for students to learn advanced telecom skills. Thus, it is a strong step towards making India digitally strong and safe for all its citizens.
