Samudra Pradakshina: India’s First Tri-Service All-Women Global Sailing Expedition

Introduction

‘Samudra Pradakshina’ is India’s first-ever tri-service all-women circumnavigation sailing expedition, flagged off virtually by the Defence Minister from the Gateway of India, Mumbai. It is a historic step towards gender inclusion and jointness among the Indian Armed Forces.

About the Expedition

The team consists of 10 women officers — 5 from the Army, 1 from the Navy, and 4 from the Air Force. The journey will be undertaken on the IASV Triveni, a 50-foot indigenous yacht built in Puducherry, showcasing India's self-reliance in shipbuilding. The voyage will cover 26,000 nautical miles, cross the Equator twice, and round the three major capes: Leeuwin, Horn, and Good Hope. The journey will begin in September 2025 and end in May 2026, visiting four foreign ports along the way.

Training and Preparation

The crew has undergone over 2.5 years of training, including blue-water sailing, navigation, communication, scuba diving, and medical skills. They even participated in a sailing expedition to Seychelles for experience.

Objectives and Significance

* Women Empowerment (Nari Shakti): Highlights the strength and leadership of women in uniform. * Jointness: Encourages unity and cooperation among the three services. * Scientific Contribution: Supports research on ocean biodiversity and micro-plastics. * Strategic Messaging: Projects India's maritime strength and global outreach.

Conclusion

Samudra Pradakshina is not just a sailing mission, but a symbol of courage, unity, and national pride. It reflects India's rising maritime vision, the spirit of Atmanirbhar Bharat, and the unstoppable force of Nari Shakti.
