Ponduru Khadi

Ponduru Khadi is a traditional handspun and handwoven cotton fabric from Ponduru village, Srikakulam district, Andhra Pradesh.
Recently granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry.
Locally known as Patnulu and nominated under the One District One Product (ODOP) scheme.
Cotton used is indigenous (hill cotton, punasa cotton, red cotton) grown locally.
Entire production process is manual, from cotton to fabric.
Unique feature: Cotton is cleaned using the jawbone of Valuga fish, a practice exclusive to Ponduru.
Spinning is done using single-spindle 24-spoke “Gandhi Charkha”—now found only in Ponduru.
Produces fabric with a high yarn count (100–120), making it extremely fine.
Praised by Mahatma Gandhi in Young India during the freedom movement.
