PM Ekta Malls: Promoting Local Products and Handicrafts
The Union Government has launched the PM Ekta Malls under the ‘One District, One Product’ (ODOP) initiative to promote local products, Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged goods, and handicrafts. Announced in the Union Budget 2023-24, the initiative aims to give artisans, weavers, and small producers better market access and visibility.
Objective and Features
PM Ekta Malls offer permanent retail spaces where each state can showcase its unique ODOP items. These malls support self-reliance by directly connecting local producers with consumers. Located mainly in state capitals or major financial and tourism hubs, the malls are designed to attract more footfall and sales.
Funding and Implementation
The scheme is part of the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) and is managed by the Ministry of Finance. A budget of ₹5,000 crore was allocated for the financial year 2023-24. Projects are approved based on a first-come, first-served basis. States must provide land for free or cover the cost. So far, 27 states have received approvals, with Uttar Pradesh getting the highest allocation of ₹370.25 crore for three malls.
Current Progress
States like Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, and Maharashtra have received significant funding. However, regions such as Delhi, West Bengal, and Jammu & Kashmir have yet to begin their projects.
PM Ekta Malls are a step towards preserving and promoting India’s rich cultural heritage. By offering a national platform for local artisans, the initiative supports small businesses and boosts the local economy while celebrating regional identity.
