Parbati Giri
Parbati Giri was a prominent freedom fighter and social worker from Odisha, popularly known as the Mother Teresa of Western Odisha. Inspired by Gandhian ideology, she played an active role in India’s freedom struggle and later devoted her life to the service of the poor and marginalized.

Born on 19 January 1926 in Samleipadar village, present-day Bargarh district, Odisha
Participated in the Quit India Movement (1942) at the age of 16
Led local agitations against British rule, including boycott of Bargarh Court
Strongly influenced by Mahatma Gandhi and Gandhian philosophy
Trained at Gandhian Ashrams in Bari, Wardha, and Delhi
Associated with freedom fighter Rama Devi
After Independence, dedicated herself to social service, working for the poor, orphans, and destitute women
Known as ‘Banhi-kanya’ (Daughter of Fire) and ‘Badamaa’ (Big Mother)
Continued social work until her death
