Operation Weed Out

The problem of drug trafficking is a serious challenge for India. To fight this, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has launched Operation Weed Out, a nationwide mission to stop the smuggling of hydroponic weed, a high-potency form of cannabis, from Southeast Asia.

What Is Operation Weed Out?

Operation Weed Out is an anti-drug enforcement drive under the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), Ministry of Finance. It focuses on blocking drug syndicates that attempt to bring hydroponic cannabis into India and circulate it in the market.

Key Objectives

* Stop the illegal inflow of hydroponic weed from abroad. * Break the network of traffickers and their financiers. * Strengthen the vision of Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (Drug-Free India).

Recent Seizures

In less than 20 days, DRI seized 108.67 kg of hydroponic weed through operations across India. Major recoveries include 39.2 kg at Mumbai airport and 7.8 kg in another case from Bangkok. Earlier, a big operation in August 2025 led to the seizure of 72 kg of weed worth Rs. 72 crore along with illegal cash of Rs. 1.02 crore. Arrests were made under the NDPS Act, 1985. *Features of the Operation* * Intelligence-based raids at airports and cities. * Multi-agency coordination with customs, police, and airport security. * Financial trail investigation to catch masterminds. * Strict legal action under NDPS Act.
