Operation Mahadev
Operation Mahadev: A Major Counter-Terrorist Success in Kashmir
Operation Mahadev was a high-profile joint counter-terrorism operation conducted near Lidwas, Harwan in Srinagar. It was launched by the Indian Army (Para SF), CRPF, and Jammu & Kashmir Police under the leadership of the Chinar Corps. This operation led to the elimination of three major terrorists linked to the Lashkar-e-Taiba group.
Objective and Execution
The main goal of Operation Mahadev was to neutralise terrorists involved in recent deadly attacks, especially the brutal April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians. Acting on a precise intelligence input, security forces launched the operation in the dense forest area of Harwan, leading to an intense gunfight.
Key Terrorists Eliminated
Among the three terrorists killed was Suleiman Shah, also known as Hashim Moosa, a former Pakistani Army officer and the mastermind behind the Pahalgam massacre. The other two killed were Abu Hamza and Yasir, both considered high-value targets. Yasir was also believed to be involved in the same attack.
Seizures and Strategic Impact
During the encounter, the forces recovered multiple weapons including AK-47s, carbines, 17 rifle grenades, and more. This operation dealt a heavy blow to the terror infrastructure supported across the border. It also exposed the involvement of trained Pakistani operatives in terrorism within Kashmir.
Operation Mahadev is a strong example of how joint efforts by Indian security forces can effectively eliminate major threats. The success boosts the morale of the forces and sends a clear message against terrorism. It also highlights the importance of intelligence and quick, coordinated action in maintaining national security.
