Operation Chakra V
Operation Chakra V is the fifth phase of India’s ongoing anti-cybercrime initiative, led by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Launched in 2025, it specifically targets transnational cyber frauds, including “digital arrest” scams, which involve deceptive tactics to extort money from victims under the guise of legal actions.
Key Highlights of Operation Chakra V
• Scope and Execution:
The operation involved coordinated raids across multiple states, including Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Kerala, and West Bengal. Approximately 40 locations were searched, leading to the dismantling of illegal call centers and the arrest of several individuals linked to these cybercrime syndicates.
• Modus Operandi:
Cybercriminals posed as law enforcement or government officials, informing victims of legal actions against them. They then demanded immediate payments to avoid arrest, exploiting the victims’ fear and lack of awareness.
• International Collaboration:
The operation saw cooperation between Indian authorities and international agencies, including the National Police Agency of Japan and Microsoft Corporation, to track and apprehend the perpetrators.
• Financial Impact:
The frauds orchestrated under this scheme involved significant sums, with some perpetrators receiving payments from victims and forwarding the proceeds to accomplices in India.
Significance
Operation Chakra V underscores India’s commitment to combating cybercrime through a multi-agency approach, leveraging both domestic and international resources. It highlights the evolving nature of cyber threats and the need for continuous vigilance and cooperation among global law enforcement agencies.
