New FASTag-Based Annual Pass
New FASTag-Based Annual Pass: Simplifying Highway Travel for Private Vehicles
Introduction
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has introduced a FASTag-based Annual Pass aimed at making highway travel smoother, more cost-effective, and digitally efficient for private non-commercial vehicles. The new system will be rolled out on August 15, 2025, benefitting frequent travellers on National Highways and Expressways.
What is FASTag?
FASTag is an RFID-based electronic toll collection system that allows automatic deduction of toll charges without stopping at toll booths. Made mandatory in 2021, it is linked to a prepaid wallet or bank account and helps reduce congestion and fuel wastage.
What is the FASTag-Based Annual Pass?
The new scheme offers a prepaid pass worth ₹3,000, valid for 1 year or 200 trips, whichever comes first. It applies only to non-commercial private vehicles like cars, jeeps, and vans. The pass allows free passage at National Highway (NH) and National Expressway (NE) fee plazas, reducing per-trip charges significantly.
Key Benefits and Features
* Cost Savings: Each pass can save users up to ₹7,000 annually.
* Convenient Travel: Eliminates the need for per-trip payments, especially beneficial for frequent travellers.
* Activation: Available via the Rajmarg Yatra app or NHAI website, using an already existing FASTag after vehicle eligibility verification.
* Non-Transferable: Linked to a specific vehicle and deactivated if misused in commercial vehicles.
Limitations
The pass does not apply to State Highways or locally managed toll plazas, and the fee is subject to annual revision.
Conclusion
The FASTag Annual Pass is a significant step towards hassle-free, cashless, and time-saving highway travel. It supports the government’s Digital India mission and is expected to ease congestion and disputes at toll plazas for millions of private vehicle users.
