MERITE Scheme
MERITE Scheme: Transforming Technical Education in India
The Multidisciplinary Education and Research Improvement in Technical Education (MERITE) Scheme is a major initiative by the Government of India to upgrade technical education. Approved by the Union Cabinet in August 2025, the scheme will run from 2025-26 to 2029-30 with a budget of ₹4200 crore, including ₹2100 crore as a World Bank loan.
Objectives and Coverage
MERITE aims to improve the quality, equity, and governance of technical education. It covers 275 government and government-aided institutions across all States and Union Territories—comprising engineering colleges, polytechnics, and affiliating technical universities.
Key Features
The scheme supports multidisciplinary education, research enhancement, and digitalisation. Around 7.5 lakh students are expected to benefit through improved employability, updated curricula, internships, and skill development. Emphasis is also placed on faculty development, gender equity, and the creation of research hubs and incubation centres.
Implementation Strategy
MERITE will be implemented as a Central Sector Scheme via a Central Nodal Agency, with direct fund transfers to institutions. Premier institutions like IITs, IIMs, AICTE, and NBA will support its execution. States and UTs are active stakeholders, contributing to the scheme’s design and implementation.
Alignment with NEP-2020
MERITE is closely aligned with the National Education Policy-2020, focusing on curriculum reform, blended learning, closing the digital divide, and strengthening institutional governance.
The MERITE Scheme is a forward-looking initiative to reshape India’s technical education system. By integrating research, innovation, and inclusive practices, it aims to prepare students for future job markets and foster sustainable national development.
