Mahanadi River Water Dispute

Mahanadi River Water Dispute – A Step Towards Peaceful Resolution

The Mahanadi River, one of the major rivers in peninsular India, flows through Chhattisgarh and Odisha, and has been at the center of a long-standing water-sharing dispute. After years of legal battles, both states are now showing interest in settling the issue through dialogue.

Geography and Importance
The river originates in Chhattisgarh’s Dhamtari district and flows around 900 km before draining into the Bay of Bengal. It passes through Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and touches parts of Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and Madhya Pradesh. The Hirakud Dam, Satkosia Gorge, and the fertile delta region highlight its ecological and economic importance. The river supports agriculture, biodiversity, and millions of livelihoods.

Background of the Dispute
Odisha has long complained that Chhattisgarh’s construction of upstream barrages and dams affects the natural water flow, especially during the dry season. This impacts agriculture and drinking water in Odisha’s lower basin. Odisha moved the Supreme Court in 2016, which led to the formation of the Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal in 2018.

Positive Shift Towards Dialogue
Now, both states have agreed to explore an amicable solution. The tribunal has granted more time, fixing the next hearing on September 6, 2025. Odisha and Chhattisgarh CMs have exchanged letters, and meetings have been held at both political and administrative levels.

The move from court battles to cooperation is a major step in solving river disputes. With support from the Centre and Union Ministers, there is hope that the Mahanadi issue will soon be resolved peacefully, setting a good example for other inter-state water conflicts in India.
