Kolleru Lake
Kolleru Lake is one of the largest freshwater lakes in India, located in Andhra Pradesh, noted for its biodiversity, migratory birds, and flood-balancing role.
Located near Eluru in the inter-deltaic plain of the Krishna and Godavari rivers
Functions as a natural flood-balancing reservoir for the Krishna–Godavari river system
Covers about 308 sq. km under normal conditions and expands up to 954 sq. km during peak floods
Largest freshwater lake in Andhra Pradesh and shallow in nature
Receives water from Budameru, Ramileru, Tammileru, and Errakalva rivers
Also fed by 18 drains
Drains into the Bay of Bengal through the outlet known as Upputeru
Commonly called the “Peerless Fishermen’s Paradise” and “Bird Heaven”
Supports over 20 million migratory birds annually
Major bird species include grey pelican, painted stork, and open-billed stork
Acts as an important habitat for birds migrating from Siberia, Central Asia, and the Himalayas
Declared a Wildlife Sanctuary in November 1999
Recognized as a Ramsar Site
