Kerala’s KITE Initiative: Transforming Education with Ethical AI Integration
Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE) is a pioneering initiative by the Government of Kerala to modernise school education through Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Recognised globally by UNICEF, KITE ensures ethical, inclusive, and open-source-based AI integration in education.
Background and Evolution
Originally launched as the IT\@School Project in 2001-02, KITE was transformed into a Section 8 Company in 2017. It is the first Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) of Kerala’s Education Department, funded by Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB). Its mission is to upgrade educational institutions to international standards through ICT infrastructure, capacity building, and e-learning interventions.
Key Features of the AI Initiative
KITE’s AI integration includes mass training of over 80,000 teachers in AI ethics, bias detection, and curriculum alignment. The initiative uses Free and Open-Source Software (FOSS) across 15,000+ schools, ensuring transparency and cost-effectiveness. Its Samagra Plus AI Platform, curated by expert teachers, aligns AI tools directly with the state curriculum while avoiding commercial bias or surveillance models.
Student-Centric Innovations
Little KITEs IT Clubs train over 1 lakh students in AI, robotics, and related fields through practical, contextual learning, promoting data sovereignty and digital empowerment. Projects like Hi-Tech School and Hi-Tech Lab have digitised 45,000 classrooms, enhancing learning outcomes significantly.
KITE stands as a global model of responsible EdTech, combining infrastructure development with ethical AI deployment to create a robust, inclusive, and technologically empowered education ecosystem in Kerala.
