India’s Longest Freight Train ‘Rudrastra’: A Step Towards Efficient Logistics
Indian Railways has created history by launching ‘Rudrastra’, the country’s longest-ever freight train. It marks a significant achievement in freight transport and logistics, making India one of the leading countries in long-haul train operations.
Train Features and Route
Rudrastra is 4.5 to 5 kilometers long and is made by linking six standard rakes into one unit. It has 354 wagons, each carrying around 72 tonnes of cargo, and is powered by seven locomotives. The engines are positioned at the front and between the rakes to support its heavy load. The train covered a 200-kilometre route from Ganjkhwaja (Uttar Pradesh) to Garhwa Road (Jharkhand) in about five hours, averaging a speed of 40 km/h. The route includes both the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) and regular railway tracks.
Purpose and Benefits
The main goal of Rudrastra is to improve the efficiency of goods transport. By combining six trains into one, Indian Railways saves time, fuel, manpower, and reduces repeated crew and scheduling efforts. It also helps in faster loading and unloading of goods, cutting down overall travel time.
Global Comparison and Management
While Rudrastra is the longest in Asia, the global record is held by Australia with a 7.3 km train. However, Rudrastra is a major step forward for India. The project was managed by the DDU Division of East Central Railway, with technical support from the Dhanbad Division.
Rudrastra shows how Indian Railways is advancing towards world-class freight systems. It improves logistics efficiency, saves resources, and strengthens India’s position in global railway operations.
