India Successfully Test-Fires Agni-I and Prithvi-II Missiles

India successfully test-fired its nuclear-capable short-range ballistic missiles, Agni-I and Prithvi-II, from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, Odisha, showcasing its robust strategic deterrence capabilities.

About Agni-I and Prithvi-II

Both missiles form the backbone of India’s nuclear deterrence strategy. Prithvi-II has a range of \~350 km, can carry payloads up to 500 kg, and is capable of delivering both conventional and nuclear warheads with high accuracy due to its advanced inertial navigation. Agni-I, with a range between 700–900 km and payload capacity of up to 1,000 kg, is also capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear warheads. Deployed in the Indian Army since the early 2000s, these missiles strengthen India’s minimum credible deterrence posture.

Purpose of the Tests

The tests were conducted by the Strategic Forces Command to validate the technical and operational parameters, ensuring combat readiness, deterrence reliability, and accuracy of delivery systems. The tests gain importance post the May 2025 Indo-Pak conflict, reinforcing India’s second-strike capability and strategic confidence.

Akash Prime Test

A day before these launches, India also tested the Akash Prime missile in Ladakh. It is an upgraded version capable of operating above 4,500 metres, featuring an indigenously developed radio frequency seeker. This test demonstrated India’s strengthened air defence near the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

These successful tests of Agni-I, Prithvi-II, and Akash Prime underline India’s commitment to bolstering its strategic arsenal, enhancing national security, and maintaining credible deterrence amidst evolving regional security challenges.
